“to regulate a pleasant form of living”
Harry Callahan, writing in a grant application after World War II, asked for money in order to “photograph . . .to regulate a pleasant form of living.” This seems to me to be the best reason to pursue any craft. Whether it be photography, writing or beer brewing, the regular rhythm of craft, the slow, steady build up of skills and self-confidence, does indeed regulate life. It evens out the low points by providing successes to look forward to or back on. And, if pursued with any degree of honesty, every craft regularly knocks you back to earth when hubris has taken you too high.
I wonder if the new Luminous Landscape Endowment would buy me an M8 to help me “regulate a pleasant form of living?” A boy can dream . . .

Well, that really rang my chimes. But I’m wary of my old nemesis, the ellipsis, which often hides cunning retargeting of words. (it’s not that I distrust Matt. It’s that often the ellipsis is passed on, generation to generation, so Matt might have inherited it, as it were). A quick search with Google landed me on this page (link points to the Google cache, because the full text page requires a subscription.) which gives a somewhat fuller quotation and a reference: When he was 34, Callahan wrote what might remain the truest and most naïve of all grant proposals. He was asking for money “to photograph as I felt and desired; to regulate a pleasant form of living; to get up in the morning — free, to feel the trees, the grass, the water, sky or buildings, people — everything that affects us; and to photograph that which I saw and have always felt.” [...]
Government grants are known to benefit the business house to translate the start up into a high profit solvent business house. The publications are innumerable however procuring Government grants is primarily limited to not for profit organizations which are known to provide services and benefits for the community at large.
The provision of a Grant needs an enormous amount of research and assimilation of resources which could well be the modality of procuring of Government Grants.
The Government Grant provision federal agencies could well be applied to by using this electronically mediated agency. The different options available could well be identified and utilized. In contrast the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance could well be accessed to identify and utilize the diverse grants and assistance available for Government Grants.
