If I go too long without using the 50 Hex wide open, I sometimes forget how pretty an image it can make. It isn’t the sharpest lens in the world, but it’s smooth wide open, much like some older lenses. However, unlike many older lenses, you can shoot it against light without fear of flaring the image out.

The Kate’s portrait is outstanding, although you are always trespassing the minimum distance from the subject… If you have a chance to reshoot this, try to place the scattered lamps in the upper right rather than left corner of the frame, that would be perfect.

The frame would be better balanced with the position of the lights switched, but this was taken in a small restaurant, without a lot room to maneuver, so I took what I could get.
