A very good shot, like the contrast and tremendous detail in the portrait together with the toned down and out of focus background. The bright frame is a very effective element to underline this. As far as the future is concerned, I can only imagine it relates to Kate’s trusty smile.
Thanks, Marek. This neg was hard to scan, and I still haven’t figured out how to print it without loosing detail in the skin tones.
The title probably doesn’t work that well, but this space - a museum exhibit on the X11 prize - reminded me of something from an old scifi movie. I love this light.
“Matt, very nice photo, but did you intend for Kate’s face to look so light?”
Bob, I knew when I saw this light that I’d be pushing the limits to keep detail in Kate’s face and some hint of detail in her sweater and the background. The light was falling bright and even on her face, but the structure of space limited the amount of light falling on the background. I wanted it to look almost like something out of a music video. It came out pretty much the way I intended, although this is definitely a shot where subtle monitor variations can make a big difference.
I’m hoping to make it really work in a print, but I’m not quite there yet.

Matt, very nice photo, but did you intend for Kate’s face to look so light? There is not much detail of her face. bobk
