    Hi Matt,
The more decentered composition can be useful to refresh the style and looks a lot HCB to me. I am glad you feel like taking photos is becoming second nature to you… I’d recommend that you try to travel more or get employed in a big city, so that your visual stimulus could be richer… Take care…

    Hi Marek,

It’s funny you mention travel as Kate and I are in the midst of planning a two week trip to Berlin and Amsterdam. The plane tickets have been purchased, and now we are trying to round up hotels. I’ve been missing living in the city. Our short trip to Washington DC earlier this summer made has really got us thinking about an eventual relocation.

    cheers,

    Matt

BTW, I’ve been studying my HCB and using my 50 more. The 50 is hard lens to use if you switch between it and other lenses, but if you commit to it, composition starts to come naturally again. I think I might need to set aside the 35s for a while.

Matt - very nice photos of Kate; the best, I think, is the left lower quadrant picture.

I agree about the 50 - it is actually a difficult focal length, really pretty demanding - have to get close and compose well. You do not get the visual effects of the wider angles, or the more concentrated view of the short telephotos. Yet, when you do the work, a really superb image results, with no apparent artifact.

My next project is my IIIf with a 50 - probably a very nice Summarit I have, or maybe the Summitar - and a bright line finder. I will take that to Germany with me in September.

I just finished a trip to St Louis - used my Nikon D1X and a Leica M3, 40mm f1.4 Voightlander. I enjoy aspects of digital, but still love the look and process of B&W film.

When are you going to be in Germany? In the south at all? It would be great to meet up for a talk.

    Max

I don’t think I’ve ever commented particularly on your images of Kate. So, just for the record, I’ll mention that perhaps the most revealing comment of any kind I can remember you making (and you’ve made many, many revealing insightful comments) was the one where you mentioned that your revival of interest in photography coincided with your involvement with Kate (or words to that effect).

    To that I say ‘Amen.’

She seems to bring out your best.

  6. matt Says:

Max, we will be in Berlin at the end of October. Send me an email if you will be in the area at that time. Good luck with the IIIf.

Chris, thanks. I think it’s important to know what drives us and how valuable that inspiration can be. Kate’s always supported and encouraged my photography. What more can you ask for?

A few shots from my trip to Berlin last October, complete with unseasonably good weather! Returning this year at Christmas for a bit of snow and Christmas Markets. Fantastic city, full of character, and unlike the UK, they don’t get jittery with you going round taking pictures.

  8. matt Says:

Bill, it looks like you had great weather. I’m planning on chilly and wet for our trip, but I like that kind of weather anyway.

Looks like you got some interesting architecture shots. What would be your list of don’t miss places? Kate and I will be there for nearly a full week.

I can feel the warmth and support in Kates eyes…..Don’t sell anything yet, do the change first with the other gear out of sight/mind. If it works, sell and get a second M6 with a .58 finder with your fav 35… its an investment, can only go up…as a glasses wearer that’s my advice. AND you can’t spend it if it’s invested, wisely. Be Well, Bill
