I find both versions a little off, but having to choose would prefer the second one. I think you should try a tonality that just preserves some details in the hair and under the left eye, otherwise, you may want to make a darkish one and do some dodging and burning…
I’ve noticed from your portraits, that you use the full aperture of the Biogon 35 quite often - the background on the umbrella photo looks very nice…
I think you should try if you haven’t done that yet, to shoot a roll or two of portraits with the C Sonnar 50/1.5. The early version ( which I bought second hand from the bay) has been optimized for focal plane sharpness at f2.8, and at this aperture you get about 10-12cm of dof - just enough to make the face sharp, but the background blur is spectacular. This lens has uncorrected spherical aberration up to f4, after f5.6 it becomes sharp as hell - a real dr jeckyll and mr hyde… If you are curious, I can send you a couple of portrait samples via mail - I normally don’t want to put up photos of people from my surroundings on the net.
